The Most Value-For-Money Indian Cruiser On The Market Today

The best power, style, and performance combination in Indian's lineup

BY ANTHONY CAPOBIANCO COURTESY TOPSPEED

SUMMARY

  •  The Indian Scout Bobber is a top-ranking cruiser with modern tech at an unbeatable $13,699 price point.
  •  It boasts the SpeedPlus engine with 105 HP and 82 lb-ft torque for sharp acceleration.
  •  Ride modes, traction control, cruise control, LED lights, and a USB port are all standard inclusions.

The Indian Scout lineup has built a reputation for being home to simplified, stylish, and fun-to-ride cruisers. That reputation is the reason why the Scout has been so successful for the manufacturer for decades. To keep the trend going, the American bikemaker even announced a sizable update for the Scout family for the upcoming model year.

In this lineup, the one variant that seems to score high in every category at a very affordable price is the Scout Bobber in Limited trim. With an MSRP starting at $13,699, it is one of the top-ranking Scouts that gives riders the most value from every angle. It rightly exceeds your expectations from a "budget" American cruiser by leaning heavily into modern riding technology while still retaining all the necessary standard cruiser elements. So let's explore the Scout Bobber Limited a bit further and discover why this is the Indian with the best payoff for your money.

The first Scout built by Indian dates back as far as 1920. At the time, it served as a likable, simple motorcycle built to last for endless miles and shake up its competition (read Harley-Davidson). Fast-forward over 100 years and the Scout Bobber serves the same duty today, albeit with more focus on performance and technology. Considering all of it is at a price point in the neighborhood of $15k, that's a hard-to-beat value proposition today. Indian has officially entered the digital revolution that many automotive brands have embraced in the last few years, and this motorcycle makes sure that you will most certainly get what you pay for.

Competition-wise, the Indian Scout Bobber is in a bit of its own league. Its closest rival seems to be the Harley-Davidson Nightster Special, which is priced at $13,499. However, it promises a less powerful engine and doesn't look as "American" as the Scout to our eyes. Other market rivals include the Honda Rebel 1100 and Triumph Bonneville Bobber.

Powered By The New Liquid-Cooled SpeedPlus Engine

Power: 105 HP; Torque: 82 Pound-Feet

The beating heart of the Indian Scout Bobber Limited is the SpeedPlus 1250, a completely redesigned 1250 cc liquid-cooled V-Twin tuned to deliver 105 HP and 82 pound-feet of torque. For most modern-day American cruisers, generating over 100 HP is an uncommon accomplishment. And those that do also happen to hold a higher price point in the neighborhood of $20k. So the Bobber's output is certainly unrivaled for its MSRP.

Additionally, this is a significant power hike over the Scout Sixty, which is powered by a 60 cu V-Twin that generates only 78 HP. So when it comes to intermediate and experienced riders who really want sharp acceleration and superior passing power, the Scout Bobber Limited is an easy choice. This power output is supported by an electronic fuel injection system that delivers a consistent and steady stream of fuel for instant throttle response, as well as a six-speed transmission that eggs you to play around with the gears.

SpeedPlus 1250 Engine Highlights

  • 11 percent more powerful than the previous SpeedPlus V-Twin
  • 105 HP at 7.250 RPM
  • 82 pound-feet at 6,300 RPM
  • 12.5:1 compression ratio
  • Electronic Fuel Injection
  • Blacked-out construction
  • Slipper assist clutch

Iconic Indian Scout Architecture

Front Suspension: 41 mm telescopic forks; Rear Suspension: Dual shocks

Similar to its PowerPlus 1250 engine, the Indian Scout Bobber Limited's front and rear suspension qualify as high-quality. It is a setup engineered to handle the riding habits of the most experienced and aggressive riders. A 41 mm telescopic fork with 4.1 inches of front travel serves duty up top while a set of 51 mm (2.0 inch) dual shocks do the deed in the rear. By utilizing this combination, intermediate and experienced riders will be very impressed and satisfied with how smoothly this bike soaks up your favorite roads.

The Indian Scout Bobber Limited keeps itself in a bit of a sweet spot weight-wise. It's not too heavy where sporty riders would feel over-encumbered. But it's also not too light to allow strong gusts of wind and larger vehicles on the highway to hinder its stability. It is right in the middle where it remains both nimble and maneuverable, but also muscular and rock solid. Not to mention that it also features a 25.6-inch seat height that sets it up to be a welcoming cruiser to a very diverse range of riders.

Tech-Savvy With Likable Modern Features

Standard bits: Ride modes, cruise control, ABS

The shiny centerpiece of the Scout Bobber Limited is its feature list. Like the standard model, the Limited trim boasts a semi-digital instrument cluster that enables you to enjoy the latest in riding technology at your fingertips, all while condensed in a very user-friendly platform. But it unlocks a few extras to justify the extra money you spend over the standard model.

Most notably, you get a likable electronics package. It includes three ride modes (Sport, Standard, and Tour) which allow riders to adjust throttle response to dial-in their ride experience. This is topped by traction control and cruise control. Aside from this, a USB charging port, dual-channel ABS, and all-LED lights round off the feature list. In case you think that's not enough, there's also a Limited+ trim on offer. The '+' unlocks Indian's bespoke TFT instrument cluster armed with Ride Command and Ride Command+ connected services. You get turn-by-turn navigation, different gauge screens that riders can customize to their personal style, ride stats, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Plus, you'll be able to remotely monitor the motorcycle's health (fuel level, battery life, engine hours, ambient temperature), pinpoint the motorcycle's exact location with the Bike Locator feature, and mark your favorite spots on the map from your Indian Motorcycle app and have them automatically sync up with the Scout Bobber Limited's display. All of it costs $1,500 more than the Limited trim and breaches the $15,000 mark. It's partly why we picked the mid-spec Limited variant and not the Limited+ as the most VFM cruiser motorcycle in Indian's lineup today.
